A walk down the memory lane
At her flat in Nottingham, Eva is truly restless trying to sort out the list of things necessary to fix the set of her new movie. She is an Art director working for Mr. Wills, one of the most happening and perfect directors of the industry. It’s like a dream coming true for her, and It being the final date of submission, she has no much clue on what to do or how to do. Susan could feel some sort of uneasy feeling slowly creeping in to her pavilion of comfort. It’s been the third day of restlessness and still she did not accept the fact that she is actually starting to feel tired.
A woman into her early thirties, she is as charming as ever, tall, vibrant with jumping hormones, she is definitely worth looking at. For that case not anyone on earth would believe that she is mother to seven year old Ron. Adjusting her glasses, and already messed up hair, she writes rewrites and does almost everything possible to focus and misses Mike the most. Mike is working for an advertising firm and is her best buddy since college. The most talked about talented couple during college days, they had ‘n’ number of reasons to end up being together for a life time. Even when they fixed on to their decision of strengthening their bond of love by getting married, they knew that would still remain to be best buddies till the end of their life. Such was the mutual understanding and love between them and for Mike he always stood by Eva’s side and that very thought made her proud every moment she thought of it.
Sneaking in to Eva’s room through the back side and after conveniently hiding something beneath the couch in which she sat, out of extreme happiness Ron rolls over the low lying couch and hugs her from back. Now she knew that he is happy and noticed that he is happier than ever before. Susan knows every notion of him and can interpret each of his actions. He gets off the couch within a nick of time, finding Eva trying hard to indulge in what she was doing before. Now she is not stressed; Ron is more or less like a stress reliever for her and helps her fill that void when Mike is not in town. It’s still a wonder for her to notice Mike’s new lifestyle; after Ron entered their life, he adds on more colour and life into their busy working schedule. Even before she took a glance over her work, he gets back. This time trying to hide something from her. With raised brows and funny face Eva pretends to snatch it from him. Even before she touches him in real he hands it over to her. It’s a little trophy and proudly announces his reason for happiness.
Ron: “Mummy, mummy I got first prize for short story writing competition.
As Eva sat shocked looking at him he continued to say; pulling her dress to grab more of her attention.
Ron: “Mummy, mummy, my teacher presented me this and chocolates”.....
” she gave me loads of chocolates, loads of them”
He still wanted to continue and left the trophy on Eva’s lap and handed over the story to her. He kept on pulling her dress and repeating it until she actually started to glance over it. It took her back to her college days; every mannerism of Ron and his urge to hear her opinion on the story made her Miss Susan.
Susan...................... she took a sigh of relief
She could remember every bit of it and trying to recollect those moments, a feeling of nostalgia came into her. Susan and she were classmates and more over room mates. Eva always believed that they shared an immense bond; something that is hard to be put in words. Susan was shorter than her, with bulgy eyes, chubby cheeks and short wavy hair, her eyes had life to be told; experiences that actually made her look real matured regardless of her age. She had mysteries to be unfolded all concerning her life. Each of their conversation was a new lesson to Eva who was a stranger to the college and the posh lifestyle in which Susan was raised. Yet, they stuck together through out college and amazingly got placed the same day at two different organisations of their choice; while Eva made it as an Art director, Susan got placed in a news paper organisation.
She could hear Susan’s voice still echoing on her ears. Time was almost eleven past fifteen and Eva was dying hard to complete her assignments as Susan approached her with a piece of paper. It’s not only that she was least bothered about her assignments but was now forcing Eva to go through something she had penned down. To her wonder it was a story; a story she just had completed; Even though at first she felt it a bit annoyed and weird to read it, the feel that she got out of reading it was really different, Eva recollected. She wrote stories sometimes with extraordinary themes.
Life went on and on......................
Susan’s life resembled a fairy tale but not always with a happy ending. Love dreams and it was all happening. Her choice of Mr Right remained right for her until the moment he decided to rule her off his life. That is what Eva was told by her. Still Susan was a strong woman. She never let emotions rule over her neither had she seen Susan in tears during the years of their college life or even later. Even when she knew that she was expecting she didn’t tremble down or shatter. She seemed to be happier than ever before. But things never remained the same after baby entered her life. Her job and baby demanding more of her time, it was tough for her to make the two sides meet. It became really hard for Susan after she resigned. She was almost starting to give up. That is what Eva felt when they met each other quite accidently at a super market.
However Eva didn’t want Susan to be left back or deserted. It was then she told her to remain engaged and try for a new job. She believed that a new working environment would get Susan back. Even Mike felt the same. Susan always led a different life. She wanted her individual space to live in and that was actually disturbed when the baby entered. She felt restless throughout and extremely sad about it. She was not only concerned about her but also about the life of her kid. Eva had a tough time convincing Susan about she and Mike being the care takers of her baby. But things turned real worse after she handed over her life to them. Susan fell into the dark depths of depression.
Lost in thoughts for a moment or so Eva had forgotten about Ron and the piece of paper she was actually glancing at. Hugging him tightly for a moment she asks him to bring an album from the room next.
She moves through the yellowish stained album until she finds Susan’s and hers photo in it. Tear drops had actually started to make channels down her nostrils .Still she couldn’t believe the fact that Susan finally fell in love with death and had given up leaving her baby with her for ever. Thinking of Susan she doesn’t know what sort of feelings she has got for her even now. It’s a fusion of emotions. She hates her for having given up despite of all her efforts and love her for the baby, that would actually make her feel Susan and it is the symbol of their ever dying friendship.
Ron stands confused wondering whether the trophy had actually meant a lot for her when Eva hugs him tight and kisses on his forehead.
